چکیده

Data infrastructures represent information about physical reality. As reality changes, data infrastructures might also be subject to change. Researchers have increasingly approached physical infrastructures as being complex adaptive systems (CAS). Although physical infrastructures are often approached as CAS, the underlying data infrastructures hardly are. Studying data infrastructures as CAS has significant implications for our understanding of them. A CAS lens will help us to identify and better understand their key elements and coordination mechanisms for their functioning and dealing with change. Accepting data infrastructures as CASs also means we need to understand the consequences for their development. On the basis of state of the art literature, and an explorative case study of Rijkswaterstaat in the Netherlands, an overview of known data infrastructural elements and the coordination mechanisms connecting them will be presented. The results show that successful development of data infrastructures requires consideration of a wide variety of elements that can be coordinated using various coordination mechanisms. We conclude that a more complete picture of what data infrastructures are and how they can be coordinated is

Towards Modelling Data Infrastructures in the Asset Management Domain

More and more asset management organizations are relying on trusted data to drive their decision making process. Yet little systematic research has been performed regarding the generation of trusted data. Trusted data has a clear, defined and consistent quality which meets the expectations of the user. The aim of the research presented in this paper is to develop a conceptual model to support a...

Adaptive Policies for Reducing Inequalities in the Social Determinants of Health

Inequalities in the social determinants of health (SDH), which drive avoidable health disparities between different individuals or groups, is a major concern for a number of international organisations, including the World Health Organization (WHO). Despite this, the pathways to changing inequalities in the SDH remain elusive. The methodologies and concepts within system science are now viewed ...

Balancing Management and Leadership in Complex Health Systems; Comment on “Management Matters: A Leverage Point for Health Systems Strengthening in Global Health”

Health systems, particularly those in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), need stronger management and leadership capacities. Management and leadership are not synonymous, yet should be considered together as there can be too much of one and not enough of the other. In complex adaptive health systems, the multiple interactions and relationships between people and elements of the system me...

Decision-support tools for municipal infrastructure maintenance management

Sewers, water pipes, and streets are elements of our civil infrastructure, the supporting structure of society. Infrastructure is a complex technical system that provides us with a varied range of essential services; a storehouse of resources and wealth that each generation inherits, uses, and passes on to succeeding generations. The asset management has a big influence on infrastructure develo...

Dependable Information Infrastructures as Complex Adaptive Systems

Information infrastructures, such as the Internet and Computational Grids, have enabled a networked computing and communication environment. Although many organizations depend on network-centric information operations to support critical missions, existing information infrastructures provide little guarantee of the dependability of network-centric computing and communication. This paper discuss...
